A role model is a person whose behavior or success is admired by other people—a person that’s usually older and wiser that we look up to, or idolize. An example of role models would be popular celebrities, professional athletes, or even a relative! Our role models may have an influence on our life, career, and education. Sometimes, we dream about becoming like our role models.
What makes a great role model?
Role models, especially for young people, are usually persons of high character and morals such as our teachers, our pastor, or a special family member. We usually pick a role model that we admire and strive to be like. But what characteristics makes a good role model?
Being Optimistic—role models almost always have a positive attitude and great strength of character.
Self-Confidence—a good role model is very confident with themselves, both inside and outside.
Respect—role models always treat others with respect, and don’t treat people badly because their views are different than theirs.
Why do we need a Role Model?
Life is full of ups and downs, and sometimes we need to look to others for answers and guidance to help us do our best and achieve our goals. It’s ok to ask others for help. We’re not perfect, and we’ll mess up. Sometimes, we just need somebody to encourage us along the way.
How to be a Role Model to someone else
Be positive! Little eyes and little ears may be listening to what you say and watching how you act. Remember that your actions may influence someone else.
Share your goals. Making good decisions are not always easy. A good role model shares problems and decisions with others to help build confidence.
Mean what you say, and say what you mean! As a role model, we need to “practice what we preach” by being on time, finish what we start, and by having a no-quit attitude.
Show respect for others. Treat others like you would want to be treated, and don’t step on others just to get ahead. It will be the little things you do every day that makes others see you as a super hero.
Be well-rounded. A person that has many interests makes a great role model. If you like karate, cooking, choir, band, you should try to participate in many different activities as your time allows.
Be yourself! Nobody likes a phony. Even if you have a role model of your own, you are still you. Have the confidence to stand out in the crowd!
Remember that you can have a role model and BE a role model at the same time. Believe in yourself, and know that you can do anything if you put your mind to it!
